Background and development [edit]

Post-obit the release of her second album Under My Skin (2004) and a world bout, Lavigne began recording textile for her tertiary anthology. While writing material, Lavigne was approached past Fox Entertainment Group to write a song for the soundtrack to the 2006 fantasy-take chances motion picture Eragon.[8] Lavigne wrote the power ballad "Keep Holding On" for the picture and stated her intentions to include information technology on her ain anthology, although she maintained that the vocal was not indicative of the sound of her next anthology.[ citation needed ] In belatedly 2006, Lavigne alleged in a blog post that she wanted to record more upbeat music, citing the material on her upcoming album as "fast, fun, young, bratty, aggressive, confident, cocky in a playful way ... all the skilful stuff".[9]

In an interview with MTV, Lavigne discussed how the writing procedure for The All-time Damn Thing was straightforward, equally she opted to write about fictional experiences that she felt were more widely relatable.[9] She intended to have fun when recording the anthology, commenting, "Some of the songs I wrote didn't even hateful that much to me. It'southward not similar some personal thing I'm going through. They're only songs".[9] Many of the sessions involved ordering accept-out and drinking alcohol, with songs such every bit "Girlfriend" and "I Tin can Do Better" being written while inebriated.[nine]

Music and lyrics [edit]

The songs were described as sounding like Toni Basil cheerleading for Glimmer-182,[10] with Lavigne praised for her power to combine bubblegum popular melodies with punk stone riffs.[11] Lavigne described the record as "fast, fun, young, bratty, rock, aggressive, confident, cocky in a playful way...all the good stuff". Many of the songs on the album did not have a deep meaning to Lavigne, with her stating "It's not like some personal matter I'1000 going through. They're just songs."[12] It was produced by Dr. Luke, Butch Walker,[xiii] Lavigne herself, and Lavigne'due south husband at the time, Sum 41 singer Deryck Whibley. Travis Barker of Blink 182 and +44, recorded some of the drums for the album as did Josh Freese when Lavigne and her party could not achieve Dave Grohl.[ citation needed ]

In June 2007, Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, with whom Lavigne co-wrote the majority of her second album, Under My Skin, spoke to Performing Songwriter magazine about Lavigne's songwriting ability and ethics. Kreviazuk claimed that the vocal "Contagious" was based on a rails she had sent to Lavigne in 2005.[twenty] [21] On 6 July 2007, Lavigne denied the accusation in an open letter on her website. She also threatened legal action against Kreviazuk for her allegations,[21] [22] and Kreviazuk ultimately made a full public apology and retracted the statements.[23]
